Holiday Masuren

In the period when the Teutonic Order ruled on the northern-eastern lands, when today locality Mateuszek lays, there was a fortified citadel. It's main aim was to be a bulwark for the Lithuanian invasions on the castle of the Teutonic Komtur in Ryn.

Once upon a time, during the chopping trees in the forest, there was an accident. A huge tree fell down towards the commander of the crew who was present at the work. Fortunately, one knight, Mateusz, managed to push his lord away and save him. The Commander didn't suffered at all during this accident, but the hero himself has been seriously injured. His sacrifice wasn't forgotten, and for his bravery deed, he got titles and lands. Mateusz was happy with those privileges and was recovering fast. Unfortunately, soon his donor had to leave due to important governmental affairs, and a disaster happened to Mateusz. Namely, at this time, there was a severe prohibition not to leave the borders of the fortification, which our hero didn't kept. As the stand-in for the commander was rough and disciplined Teutonic knight, he ordered to imprison Mateusz, because that was the law. The confined vainly waited for the return of his lord, whose life he saved, spending lonely hours in fortified tower having just bread and water as his food and drink.

When the former commander returned, Mateusz died because of hunger and exhaustion. Since then, supposedly you can meet the ghost of this knight, wandering on the roads and paths looking for consolation and peace. The legend claims, that on the rubble of the citadel was built the estate Mateuszek, that preserved to the present days.
